All of Scotland’s Boarding Schools are registered Scottish charities and, as such, they must demonstrate to the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) that they meet their charitable purposes and provide public benefit.
Since new charity legislation was introduced in 2005, 11 of the 14 boarding schools in Scotland have been assessed and each has passed the charity test successfully.

– Cargilfield School, Edinburgh
– Dollar Academy
– Glenalmond College, Perth
– Gordonstoun School, Moray
– Kilgraston School, Bridge of Earn
– Lomond School, Helensburgh
– Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh
– St Leonard’s School, St Andrews
– Strathallan School, Forgandenny
John Edward, Director of Scotish Council of independent Schools, said:
“It is no surprise to see that the charitable purpose of 11 of Scotland’s 14 boarding schools have been approved, confirming the schools’ commitment to advancing education, to widening access and to the making a worthwhile contribution to the communities they serve. These schools have always been charities, engaged in a wide range of charitable activities, and they are committed to remaining charities.”
